Johannesburg

Johannesburg was founded in 1886 when the main Witwatersrand gold-bearing reef was discovered. In 1900. Mining formed the basis of the citys wealth, but in the years that have passed it has diversified into the the hub of the economic powerhouse of the Southern African region.

Located close to the vibrant metropolis of Soweto, Johannesburg is a good place to take a guided tour of the sprawling township.

Soweto has an estimated population of over two million people, homes range from extravagant mansions to makeshift shacks. Soweto is a city of enterprise and cultural interaction. This popular tourist destination has sites such as Kliptown (where the Freedom Charter was drawn up), the home of former President Nelson Mandela, the Hector Petersen Memorial site, restaurants and shopping malls.
